Day one: five hours, sixteen minutes

Hello everyone

So, I have decided to write a blog about my life as a person who doesn’t sleep very much. It won’t all be about lying frustratedly in the dark and listening out for the paper to arrive, although there will be some of that. Like an insomniac Bridget Jones, the starting point will be how much I slept the night before (instead of calories or alcohol units.)

First I’d like you please to read the article below, which appeared in the Daily Mail on Thursday 23rd May 2019. It has a lot of the background to my situation, so I won’t need to go into it again.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-7059837/Insomnia-robbed-job-family-sanity-former-editor-Mother-Baby-magazine.html

This piece got a lot of attention and warmth from around the world: I heard from fellow journalists and readers and friends I hadn’t seen for 20 years or more. It was very flattering and humbling (apart from a few nutters who said I ‘looked good for a woman of 51 who hasn’t slept for eight years’. The captions on Mail online clearly said the photos were from 1999, when I was a baby hack on the paper.)

Anyway, I’m not entirely sure how this works, but I will be posting here on the days when I have something to say. If I don’t, I won’t.

Hope we get something out of it.

  1. I just love this blog! Humorous and beautifully written, yet poignant. To address such a difficult subject, which many people will be able to not relate to, is very brave, yet hugely important. Miranda, please continue to keep us entertained, and educated, with your insight and your weirdly funny anecdotes. Just please don’t make it too funny as I am of an age when I often do a little wee in my pants if I laugh too much. Either that, or get sponsorship from Tena Lady and mail the pads out to your followers. Need to pop to the loo now…Good luck, and always remember, if you need to fall asleep, just give me a call…xx
